The Shaman's Kiss

The Shaman's Kiss (2002) _________________________________ < BACK

Finalist for Best Vocal Album in the Australian Jazz Awards 2003

“her voice as pure as moonlight, turning percussive ....before melting into a spoken incantation over sensual rhythm.”
Leon Gettler, The Age, 3/4/03

Praised for the originality of her concept, vocalist Caroline Lynn’s debut CD The Shaman’s Kiss is a powerful statement of the feminine in contemporary jazz/world fusions. From the UK, Caroline’s formative years on the London jazz and contemporary music scene permeate her work. Her music combines the sensuality of ECM flavours with searing improvisations; beauty of tone with the poignancy of melismatic Spanish/Judeo scales; lyrical relevancy, melody and exotic grooves. The compositions comprise original pieces, traditional Spanish song, and works by Ralph Towner/Mike Nock.

"This album oozes the tingling excitement of a new love affair, or a holiday where each day is charged with new sights and adventures. Track by track Caroline Lynn unveils a fresh perspective on her broad musical world, which like so much of the best contemporary music blends jazz and folk influences.”
John Shand, ABC Limelight Magazine, July 03

"Lynn is scholarly in a completely relaxed way...... powerfully expressive”
John Clare, Metropolitan, Sydney Morning Herald 12/7/03

"..a rich, mature voice of range and technical quality without which this material would be difficult, if not impossible, to address"
John Swords, Jazz Action Society

“This expansive tapestry of jazz, world music, tabla beats, Gaelic dance, displaced rhythms and free-flowing evocative lines from the Sydney vocalist is way outside conventional jazz boundaries – wherever these might be – but jazz threads hold things together."
Leon Gettler, The Age, Melbourne, Australia

"..a remarkable and versatile voice. She sounds at home grappling with the microtones of traditional Spanish song (opening Nana) as playing the role of a Celtic sorceress"
Richard 'Cheese' Cotman, www.amplifier.co.nz
